From moments that challenge us to times of joy, America's local TV and radio broadcasters record history and bring trusted information to audiences, connecting communities across generations.
The National Association of Broadcasters invites stations nationwide to help commemorate America's 250th anniversary by celebrating our shared history in every local community. This guide offers ideas, messaging and resources to help stations participate in a way that is rooted in community service and civic engagement.
Stations are encouraged to air these We Are Broadcasters spots that celebrate local stations' role in amplifying communities' stories.

Use these messages to:
A trusted voice for shared history
Broadcast journalists help communities separate memory from myth by putting events, places and people in context and providing a trusted source for information.
A legacy of service and volunteerism
Broadcasters give back to their communities in important and unique ways and encourage their audiences to partner in service.
Access for everyone
Just as our democracy is for all, over the air broadcasting is free, resilient and available to all audiences regardless of geographic or socioeconomic status.
Stations are encouraged to consider the following ideas as inspiration for celebrating America 250 in ways that are meaningful to your local community.
Cover Your Community's Events
Highlight local events tied to America's 250th anniversary, including parades, exhibits, reenactments, lectures, volunteer activities and school programs. Emphasize how national history is reflected through local people and places.
Invite Your Audience to Tell Their Stories
Encourage viewers and listeners to share stories of people whose lives reflect the American experience, such as teachers, veterans, first responders, small business owners, community leaders and everyday neighbors. Stations may feature these stories on air, online or through social platforms.
Preserve Local History
Create a digital or on-air “story archive” featuring audio, video, transcripts and photos of important moments in your community's history. Use station archives or new interviews to highlight how your station has documented local life over the decades.
Spotlight Broadcasters' Role Through the Years
Share examples of how your station has served the community through breaking news coverage, emergency response, civic engagement and cultural milestones. Emphasize continuity, trust and service across generations.
Educate Your Audience on the First Amendment
Name the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment. Explain how a free press serves the public interest and promotes a healthy democracy. Provide examples of government accountability and positive community impact from your station’s investigative work.
Engage Policymakers and Community Leaders
Invite local, state and federal policymakers to participate in conversations about what America's 250th anniversary means to them and their communities. These discussions can take place during news segments, community affairs programs or special features.
Stations are also encouraged to share messages recorded by members of Congress with their hometown audiences.
Partner With Schools
Offer station staff as guest speakers to schools to discuss the role of broadcasters in covering history, supporting democracy and connecting communities. Highlight student reporting projects or classroom initiatives focused on the 250th anniversary.
Highlight Service and Volunteerism
Showcase your station's volunteer efforts and encourage audience participation. Ideas include:
